Tea Time

The Friday before Mother's Day was our annual Mother's Day Tea at the school. Each classroom hosts their own little party for the moms with goodies to eat and a gift for mom.  It is by far one of my favorite school traditions.

Katie's Mother's Day Tea
chips & veggies & dip, lemon cake, cookies, a handmade book mark and card along with a small cloth bag decorated by my girl

The elementary students perform a song for their mothers every year, and every year, I am certain their goal is to make their moms cry.  As soon as a few tears are shed, their grins get bigger and the singing gets grander.  This year they sang "You Raise Me Up" by Josh Groban, and as an added tear-jerker touch, they performed the sign language to the chorus.  It did not disappoint!  Sadly, I was out of video tapes & was not able to get a video recording.  I asked Katie if she would perform it for me at home, and she pretty much told me I was crazy to think she would do that!  Oh well, a mother can try.

Just look at those faces in the picture - you don't even have to hear them sing to know that the moms were wiping their eyes while smiling through their tears.  And then to hear your child sing these words - "be still my heart!"

When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary;

When troubles come and my heart burdened be;

Then, I am still and wait here in the silence,

Until you come and sit awhile with me.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;

You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;

I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;

You raise me up... To more than I can be.

I think this is a perfect mother's day song.  Do you think Josh wrote it for his mom - probably for a girl, but mom would be nice . . . I also think it works both ways as I think about how my children "raise me up to more than I can be."  We need each other - that's for certain!

Lacey's Mother's Day Tea

cheese and crackers, fruit, cream puffs, a story about a mom & her child, a hand print placemat

I missed having a Mother's Day Tea with Madi now that she's a middle schooler.  Sigh - another sign she's growing up!

Young kids singing "You Raise Me Up" to their moms? I'd be bawling. I'm using that song for my grandma's birthday video because she has a hankering for Josh G. so I was already sentimental about it, but you pushed me over the edge.

very nice to have a tea to celebrate mother's day. I became curious about your question if Josh Groban wrote You Raise Me Up -and did a quick Google search - it was written in Ireland by Lyrics by Brendan Graham | Music by Rolf Lovland and originally used in the movie version of The Secret Garden - David Foster decided to record it and gave it to a "young, up and coming artist, Josh Groban to sing" ... I guess the rest is history, as they say.

Written in Ireland, Janet? I was thinking today how Irish it sounds. Cool to know.

Janet - thanks for the info. I was curious, too, after I thought of that question, but was then too lazy to find out the answer - so thanks for doing it for me!
