The day is almost over! October 31 has significant meaning to me for 3 reasons. First, it's my brother's birthday - happy birthday Phillip! When we were kids, we thought it was cool that his birthday was on Halloween. But for a dad, a Halloween birthday has to be all but forgotten. October 31st is a day that is totally for kids, and honestly, there just isn't time for celebrating a dad's birthday. Still - I do believe it's better to have your birthday on 10/31 than on 12/24 like granddaddy Ken!
October 31 is also Nevada Day - the day Nevada was admitted to the union. Happy Nevada Day everyone! When I was a kid, we always got the day off school in celebration of Nevada Day. Of course, we just thought it was in celebration of Halloween! No - I knew it was Nevada Day - we sang this song -
Out in the land of the setting sun where the wind blows wild & free, there's a lovely spot, just the only one, that means home sweet home to me. If you follow the old Kit Carson trail until desert meets the hills, oh you certainly will agree with me, it's a place of a thousand thrills . . . home means Nevada, home means the hills. Home means the sage and the pine. Out by the Truckee silvery rills, out where the sun always shines. There is a land that I love the best - fairer than all I can see. Right in the heart of the golden west, home means Nevada to me!
A few years ago they decided to change Nevada Day to an observed holiday on the Friday before October 31st. This certainly has it's benefits, but I miss the good ol' days of no school on 10/31.
And naturally, today is Halloween. My kids were so excited when I picked them up from school today. They could hardly wait to get in their costumes & head out in search of hoards of candy. We especially enjoyed sharing the festivities of the night with our friends & neighbors, the Gallaghers. As usual, the kids looked adorable in their costumes & I was a bit frazzled trying to get everyone ready in time for dinner & trick-or-treating with the Gallaghers. But once everyone was ready, it was time to relax & have fun, & that we did.
Now - wouldn't this post be much better with photos? Of course- so I need to buy myself some more storage space so I can show you how truly adorable the kids were in their costumes!

You need to go ahead and purchase that space! We want to see the cute pictures:) I hope your night was fun! I was rushing around trying to get everyone ready in time too. For some reason Halloween always seemed so calm and fun when I was a kid. I really don't remember mom rushing around and frenzied...maybe it's just that mom/kid perception that changes when you are a mom:)
I don't remember having Halloween off in high school. Did they change it by then? And yes, we need pix.
Judy - we did have Halloween off in high school. It has only been in recent years since they changed it. In fact, you sparked my curiosity as to when it was changed so I looked it up - it was in 2003. The holiday was first observed in 1933 even though the state was admitted to the union in 1864 - so there are your Nevada Day facts for the day!
I just upgraded my account - so hopefully I can post pictures soon!
