I guess it was bound to happen. Put a little girl with her 2 big sisters & let them dress her up and style her hair & make her look older than she is for her whole life, and she's certain to take notice. Lacey has paid attention to all those little dress up sessions and now she's ready to tackle it on her own. My five-year-old is becoming a slave to fashion. Sometimes it's kind of cute, sometimes it's not. The day I took this picture, it was cute. She put her own ensemble together & I complimented her on the way her shirt & pants looked together. She walked into my closet to inspect for herself in the full length mirror. As she walked out, she said to herself, "now all I need are some pink high-heeled shoes." What? I guess she wanted her shoes to match the sunglasses. I guess that makes sense. Here are the pink high-heeled shoes . . .
When is it not cute? How about the times she refuses the wear to church those beautiful little girl dresses hanging in her closet because she wants to wear the brown skirt & t-shirt instead. This is a battle every Sunday. I finally got "smart" (at least I thought so) and made her a deal that if she would wear a pretty dress one week, then she could wear a skirt & t-shirt the next. I kept my end of the bargain, but when it was her turn, last Sunday, she pretty much refused & when I tried to get her to live up to the deal, well . . . let's just say it wasn't pretty.
On a typical day, jeans are Lacey's first clothing item of choice. She is very particular about what she matches with them. She has probably dozens of shirts in her drawer - many of the classic "little girl" style, but such shirts are of no use to Lacey. She loves to pair long shirts or short dresses with her jeans - keeping up on the latest trends, of course.
There have been those occasional days so far this summer when Lacey has said, Mom, "I am not getting dressed and I am staying in my pajamas all day." Way to go girl! I like those days!

Pink high-heeled shoes! Of course!
Why is it that getting dressed is such a big battle with girls? Taylor and I are always battling about what she is wearing. Even now she has days that she doesn't even match. I tell her that she needs to change one or the other clothing item and she throws a temper tantrum. Ugh.
And dressing for church - that's another story. She has a closet full of cute dresses, but she'd rather wear leggings. I can't get her to change either. Come to think of it, she has lots of cute clothes and she chooses jeans or shorts and an old ugly t-shirt. Most of the clothes she loves when we go to the store, but when we get home I can't get her to wear them to save my life. "I can't play soccer" or some other excuse. Why spend the money?
My mom keeps reminding me to pick my battles wisely. Isn't the way they're dressed a wise battle?
After three girls, I learned a dirty trick. The outfits I REALLY, REALLY hate...disappear in the laundry room cabinets...They are just LOST and no one can find them...And I never lie. Just get creative with my answers...Maddie: "Mom have you seen my Roxy tee-shirt?" (A hideously faded, tight hand-me-down.) Me, innocently: "Isn't it in your closet?" Ah, the joys...It only gets worse...
It is a sad day when my children insist on picking out their own clothes to wear, and it usually begins at age 2! My son, Zach is now at that stage. They never want to wear the cute, fashionable clothes, so at least Lacey has good taste. :-)
I have not had this same problem with 2 boys. My kids could care less if their clothes are from Buffalo Exchange or some Mall store...they actually are 'anti-label' and won't wear designer anything - which makes life easy. And, there isn't a lot of variety between a pair of jeans and a t-shirt....so that is the basic attire at our house. When they were small, they just got dressed in whatever I handed them - girls are SO VERY different than boys!
Lacey is already the fashion queen...why this comes to some girls more than others I will never know. I too have a fashion queen...to remain unnamed:) I like Linda's tip there. That could really come in handy!
Well...Lacey pretty much looks fantastically cute in everything!!! Even a t-shirt and skirt! (it is so sad when they outgrow the little girl frilly dress stuff..sigh...it is coming.)
