New Summer "do's"

Madi & Katie are sporting new hairstyles for the summer. Last Thursday we went to see my friend & stylist, Christina, and she went to work on the girls. Katie lost a few inches & got some layers so she can have a sassy little flip, which just fits her personality! She definitely looks sassy!

I really wish I would have taken a {before & after} picture of Madi because she really got a lot of hair taken off. She went in to the salon wanting & expecting big changes. I, as usual, was a little more reluctant about a "big change" for Madi's hair. When we got to the salon, Madi told Christina that she wanted a surprise & that she wanted Christina to cut her hair in any way she thought it would look the best. Then she told me I was not allowed to be there while Christina cut her hair. Now, Christina is the mom of 3 girls (all with cute hair) so I wasn't overly concerned, and cooperated by going to sit in the lobby. Christina came out to show me the length she was thinking of just to make sure that I was OK with it. And after Christina did her magic, this is what Madi got -

Madi is so excited about her big surprise hair & she is loving it. She got the change that she wanted & is now looking the part of an official middle-schooler. Christina said that Madi could say goodbye to her snarly, tangly hair. We're hoping she's right. I must say, it also really looks cute in low pig tails, so Madi doesn't have to look so "old" all the time, which makes me happy!

The whole haircutting experience made me think back to a little incident last summer, an incident I am hoping won't be repeated . . .

It all started with haircuts for Madi & Katie last summer. Katie came home with a similar haircut and Lacey got very upset. She cried & cried because Katie had such a big change and she didn't. (why do sisters have to compete sooooo much?) After the initial shock of seeing Katie's new hair, Lacey finished her crying and got over it, or so I thought. Later that evening, Lacey was nowhere to be found, but a lock of her hair was spotted on the floor (not attached to Lacey's head). I was not happy! I called for her - "Lacey, where are you?" No response - only silence. I called her again. And again, no response. When I called her again & she could tell that I was not a happy mommy, she finally called out from the corner of the living room where she was hiding. When I found her, I also found scissors & a mound of her hair on the floor. This scene resulted in a very unhappy mommy! As I combed out Lacey's hair to survey the damage, more hair came out in my comb. Great sighs of dismay were heard coming out of my body! Lacey did quite a hack job on her hair. Luckily, she has a lot of hair & much of the damage was not overly obvious. She did whack a few strands right at the scalp in front, and we just had to make the best with what we had. I repeated over & over to Lacey that ONLY Christina cuts hair! It was months before she was allowed to use scissors again. In fact, when she started school in September she was worried that Ms. Rosie would want her to use scissors & she wasn't allowed to do so. At that point, I told her that it would probably be OK as long as she only cut paper.

Fast forward to this summer - It has been almost a week since Madi & Katie's haircuts & Lacey seems to be fine. I did get her hair trimmed about a month prior to their cuts, so Lacey has had her turn in Christina's chair - just not a turn at a "big change, surprise haircut". When I took Madi & Katie to Christina I reminded Lacey that ONLY Christina can cut hair. I think I made my point, and I think we just might be safe! At least, we are safe until Lacey grows up a bit & decides that she is ready for that big change. I will do my best to delay that day for as long as possible!
