Our school has several wonderful annual traditions & events, but my favorite is the Mother's Day Tea. They have held this event each spring since 2000 - so this was my 7th Mother's Day Tea! Each classroom hosts a little gathering during the school day on the Monday after Mother's Day for all the moms (or another special someone - if mom can't be there). The children always prepare a song or two to sing for their moms, and we eat snacks and visit together. Of course, the children also give their moms a gift that they have made.
Lacey's was my first of 3 Mother's Day Teas on Monday & it lived up to every one of my expectations. Lacey's teacher always starts the tea off with a little story for us. Last year she read "I'll Love You Forever" & this year she read a sweet little story about an Eskimo child & his mom. We all sat on the floor in a circle together as she read the story. Then, the children sang their songs - one was sung to the tune of B-I-N-G-O - "I have a very special friend & mommy is her name oh - m-o-m-m-y, m-o-m-m-y, m-o-m-m-y, and mommy is her name oh!" After the songs, the moms got their gifts - a hot pad holder with our child's hand print painted on it as well as the card below & a very ingenious cookbook. Our little cookbook was a collection of the children's favorite recipes that their moms made - in the child's interpretation of how the recipe was made. Here are Lacey's recipes -
Chocolate chip cookies - She gets flour, chocolate chips, and I don't know what else. Puts it in the oven for I don't know how long. You take them out and let them cool down and put them in a plastic bag. You eat them!
Banana Bread - She gets flour, bananas, butter, and milk and puts it in a bowl and mixes it. She puts it in a container and puts it in the oven. She cooks it, and then she takes it out and puts butter and powdered sugar on it. Then you eat it!
Just a couple of highlights from the cookbook - one child said that all his mom knew how to make was quesadillas, another child said he didn't like anything his mom made, but he shared a recipe for something his dad made. One little girl gave her mom's recipe for tomato soup - it's great - "She puts water in a glass, stirs it, puts it on the stove and cooks it for fifteen minutes. We put it in the bowl & eat it." I love my cookbook!
After we got our gifts we ate our snacks - cheese & crackers, fruit, mini cream puffs, and water with lemon. It was a special morning & I really enjoyed the time with just my little Lace!
On the outside of this little card is the following -
This isn't just a butterfly
as you can plainly see.
I made it with my hand
which is a part of me.
It comes with lots of love
Especially to say
I hope you have a very
Happy Mother's Day

I love that cookbook idea! Very clever - sounds like a very nice day for moms.
How cute cute cute!!! What a fun mothers day you have had.
when my boys were in Elementary School we had "Moms and Muffins," which really was moms, muffins and mayhem! It was always fun and made for laughs and good memories.
Where do your kids go to school? Actually, I would like to know, but maybe you should e-mail that to me privately, if you would like.
Awwww...this brings back great memories for me. My three girls went to a school in Redlands that had a Mother's Day Tea, too. It was a very fun day for mom's, kids and teachers. I was sad that when Cameron went to kindergarten we were at a new school and they don't have that tradition.
You had a wonderful Mother's Day. I've enjoyed reading all about it!
I love this Mother's Day Tea! A great tradition. Our school does the Valentine Tea but, I like this idea better. I love Lacey's recipes! She is a smart girl!
