Did you know that this week is national turn off the tv week? If you didn't, I can understand why. It doesn't seem to be a highly publicized event. I can't imagine that there are any commercials on tv for it. But, this is the week, and we are doing it - mostly because our school is encouraging us to do so. In fact, we have no homework all week long because of this event. How cool is that? The school is encouraging us to do activities together as family, as well as individually, rather than turn on the tv or computer games. This is not a huge sacrifice for our family because we rarely turn on the tv after school because we are usually just too busy. However, I have noticed that my girls are getting on the computer to play games after school. So this is good! Yesterday Madi & Lacey painted rocks along with Madi's friend Sophie. There was lots of outside play in the neighborhood & we finished the evening playing a domino game of chickenfoot as a family. It was fun! The best thing is NO HOMEWORK - Thank you Ms. Leanne!! In case we are at a loss of things to do other than watch tv or play on the computer, the school gave us a list of ideas to do. Take a look & join in if you are interested in observing this event along with us -
Cook dinner together, make a menu, a shopping list, or prepare a sack lunch
Teach you child how to pay bills, let them fill out the check, stuff & address the envelope with return address & postage, balance the check book, etc.
Garden together, prune roses, transplant plants, plant flower beds, or tend vegetables.
Plan a family vacation together. Call & order travel brochures from a local travel agency, look at an atlas, encyclopedia, or other resource for information about your destination.
Make a simple science project.
Act out a story from one of your favorite childhood books.
Write a family letter to a relative.
Collect your photos & scrapbook together.
learn to wash and fold laundry.
Play games of strategy.

thats a very cool idea( as we're sitting here watching American Idol and House). My parents once made a deal with us that if we didnt watch TV all summer we would each get 500 dollars...it was pretty nice!
spending time with family sounds like a fun choice, especially chicken foot, i havent played that in years
This is a great idea! I did know this week was coming but didn't know exactly when. I have some children who wouldn't mind the challenge and others who would cry and sob and scream...I will have to get my courage up to try this one. I like the list of ideas your school gave you. I think I will try to sponsor this activity next year at my school :)
Sounds great! Let us know how you are all doing by the end of the week.
I don't know if I have the self control to turn the TV off during sweeps!! Good for you and your family - very brave!
Great idea! When I was growing up we only watched TV on Saturdays - Lawrence Welk and Emergency!, and Sundays - Wild Kingdom and the Wonderful World of Disney. This was until I was an adult - no joke. I had to sneak in the middle of the night to watch Princess Diana's wedding.
