Waiting for the Garbage Truck

Today my 2-year-old nephew, Ryan, taught me how important garbage trucks can be in the life of a little boy. (It's good that I have someone to teach me these things, otherwise, I wouldn't know.) While he was hanging out at my house for a while, we heard the roar of the garbage truck as it came into my neighborhood. Ryan's ears perked up immediately. He looked at me then said, "what's that?" I replied, "I think it's the garbage truck." As soon as I answered the question & saw Ryan's reaction, I knew that we would have to head outside to look for the truck. Ryan went straight for the door as fast as his little legs would carry him, and I raced to keep up, with Ben in my arms. I didn't want Ben to miss this wondrous moment. We arrived outside just in time to watch the truck head up my neighborhood. It was definitely not enough "truck time" for Ryan, so I suggested we wait in the front yard for the truck to come back out of our neighborhood. He thought that was a great idea, so we got a blanket & spread it on the grass & sat down to wait. Ryan waited as patiently as a 2-year-old can wait, but asked me several times when the truck was coming back (luckily my neighborhood isn't all that big & I knew it couldn't be TOO long). As I appreciated the beautiful day, the green grass, & 2 of the cutest little boys I know, I had to grab my camera & make the most of the moment. Just look at these boys - aren't they amazing?! I know that as time goes on, Ryan & Ben will be the best of buddies. Ryan is the only other boy cousin within 10 years of Ben's age (on the Zobrist side of the family) - these two boys are surrounded by girls! Ryan is bound to teach him all about what you do when you hang out with the guys. He's already started by teaching Ben about what to do when you see a garbage truck.

Well, you'll be happy to know that we got to see the truck as it left the neighborhood & Ryan stood on the sidewalk waving to the driver like he was the greatest man alive. The garbage man waved back & gave Ryan a grin. I just bet Ryan made his day. How often does a garbage man get to feel like a celebrity? Probably as often as there are little boys racing to the windows & sidewalks of the world to watch their big trucks empty trash cans.

Thank goodness these two have each other, so that they can appreciate these good things of life with a buddy!

being a mom in a house full of boys this post took me back several years. Now that they are teens, I just try to get them to take the garbage out and then from the side of the house to the street 2 times a week...the garbage truck excitement did wear off, and now they can't wait to drive! YIKES! Janet
