Last weekend we went for a quick trip to the cabin. The weather was perfect - cool, but not cold. Fall was certainly in the air. Ben, taking the term "fall" season quite literally, celebrated the season by "fall"ing down one little step just off the cabin deck. That one little fall propelled him into a wooden post, and he hit so hard you could hear the thump. This is what his head looked like not 5 minutes after his fall!
I had to take pictures of Ben's award-winning goose egg. He definitely wins the prize for getting the largest goose egg of any of my children - what do you think? Thankfully the goose egg didn't stay THIS big for very long. By the next day, though the bump was noticeable, it was probably half the size.
I hate to admit it, but I am the reason for this goose egg! Ben was following me as I was rushing to take this picture of Brad & Lacey fishing
They had just caught a fish & were trying for another one. Paparazzi Mama had to run & get the camera for such a photo opportunity. As I was on my way to take the picture, Ben followed me & I wasn't paying attention to him & whack - the goose egg was born! I, the distracted mother, hurriedly picked Ben up & continued on my way to get the perfect picture, only to realize seconds later that his forehead didn't look so good! Thankfully, it didn't affect Ben at all (notice the picture of him smiling to show off his lovely new appendage).
While I'm sharing stories of our cabin adventure, I have to show you these -
This is my husband playing "Survivorman" by trying to start a fire without a match. (I am hoping I don't get caught posting these pictures for awhile. He doesn't read my blog very often, so I think I might be safe. When I took the pictures he said I better not put them on the blog - oopsie sorry honey! But why do you think I took the pictures in the first place?!)
He has learned this method for fire starting from Les, the star of Survivorman, one of Brad's favorite shows. The only difference between Les & Brad is that Les can actually start a fire! Brad worked & worked at it, and even got some smoke (in the last picture by his shoe - if you look REALLY hard!) I was so entertained by the fact that he wanted to do this just for fun. Then Madi walked out, took one look at what he was doing & said, "oh no, you're doing this again?!" Again? I had no idea Brad had ever done this before. Then Madi said, "the last time we went to grandma's & you went scrapbooking, dad & Uncle Casey tried to start a fire all day long!" Keep trying boys! One day you'll be like Les.
Truthfully, I am glad my family can go somewhere, away from our daily grind, to watch movies, play games, fish, get goose eggs, & try to start fires (safely, of course). No matter what we did, we were just glad to do it together.

First off, the goose egg is nasty! poor benny! that is insane how big that is. Secondly, Im SURE survivor man Les, would NEVER wear loafers with no socks when starting a fire! Nice try though Brad
That is definitely one huge egg! Luckily Ben looks happy and totally unaware of his head:) he is a cutie.
I love the fire adventure. We better watch out because Doug is a Les fan also. I think if Brad, Casey and Doug got together there could be some serious fire fun going on;)
I cannot believe that goose egg picture was taken only five minutes after inception and that he is not crying because that looks like it hurt! That does get the prize for biggest goose egg, for sure.
One day Brad will start a fire, and hopefully you'll be there to take the picture.
I hope Ben's goose egg is only a bad memory by now. I have thought SO many times... "It is a wonder they SURVIVE childhood." It's so easy to get hurt. Jeff just got a late birthday present from our son-a "Survivor Man" DVD. We had never seen it before. I can see it will become a favorite...Maybe Jeff can become a fire starter too...
